SAC Shamans Camp Project August 2024 Update

After getting positive feedback on past Shamans Camps we at the Shamanic Arts Center are satisfied that a camp gathering is an effective preservation method for shamanic culture, how dependence on the fairgrounds in Hotchkiss for the Camps has proven to be problematic. The major problem is the fairground's rules against fires (no matter how small) while we feel that fires are essential to a ceremonial gathering.  We have decided to restructure the camp into a smaller more intimate gatherings of elders & wisdom teachers with an emphasis on ceremonies and talking story around a sacred fire (see schedule @ https://tockify.com/traveling.shamans.camp/pinboard .) Traveling Shamans Camp 2024 will be hosted on the SAC grounds (with a fire) but entrance is limited to only 20 per day. We have decided to move public fundraising efforts such as vendors away from the Traveling Shamans Camp and into the Barter Exchange Project. With this change vendor tickets have been withdrawn for this yea

Canyon Pintado Trip Report

Image
Shamanic Arts Center founders Julia and Mike Widdop arrived at Rangely for the Canyon Pintado Sa re cd Witness Project field trip on June 21, 2024 about noon.  This is their report. After lunch at the charming Main Street Cafe, we conducted a little reconnaissance to locate petroglyph sites and determine how difficult it would be to hike into them. Afternoon thunderstorms set in as we headed down Dragon Trail, A dirt road west of the highway where several sites were located. We wanted to see the Carrot Men site, especially. The road was well graded but as the rain continued the surface became slippery and we went as far as the turnoff to the Carrot Men site and decided we had better head back. We knew the majority of sites off the highway had good access to parking areas because we passed them on the way north from Fruita. The sites are well-marked and the trails are obvious. No problem getting to the rock art.  We ended up camping at the Rangely Campground. a beautiful little city cam
