Middle East Madness by Paul Levy
Before I came across the name wetiko, I made up the name “malignant egophrenia,"—or ME disease—to denote the fundamental insanity that afflicts our species. ME disease can also stand for “Middle East” Disease, as the evil and insanity that is playing out in the Middle East can be seen to be an acute outbreak of a systemic disease that pervades the greater body politic of our species. Just like every fragment of a hologram contains the whole hologram within it, what is getting acted out in the Middle East is symbolically—on all scales—reflecting back to us the deeper sickness that we suffer from: individually within ourselves, relationally with others and collectively as a whole.
This is to say that the essence of wetiko is getting dreamed up in full-bodied form—both literally and symbolically—through events in the Middle East. What this means is that what is happening in the Middle East is a revelation. As if a reflection in a mirror reflecting back to us an unconscious dynamic within ourselves, events in the Middle East are showing us the primary underlying structure of how the wetiko mind-virus works within ourselves. If we recognize what is being revealed to us about our own darkness—as well as our own light—through the mutual shadow projection that informs and gives shape to the evil that is happening in the Middle East, we can’t help but recognize the primary importance that the human psyche plays in creating world events.
This is to begin to realize the dreamlike nature of reality, which is a realization that deepens our acuity of how the wetiko mind-virus covertly operates both out in the world and within our minds. Amazingly, it is as if the mind-virus itself—by incarnating itself (taking on a body) in the Middle East—is teaching us what we need to know in order to heal it, and ourselves as well. If we don’t receive its revelatory offering, however, it will continue to destroy us. Once we open our eyes and see wetiko (which can’t stand, and has nowhere to stand, when it is seen), wetiko’s seeming power over us is dispelled, while we become empowered—in touch with our intrinsic creative power—through our act of seeing. This is why it greatly behooves us to recognize that, just like a symbol in a dream, what is happening in the Middle East is revealing something to us that it is most important for us to know.
